St. Ann Police Department installing radar gun cameras to catch speeders outside Hoech Middle School

KSDK -- Drivers beware: just because you don't see a patrol car in St. Ann doesn't mean the police won't see you.

The St. Ann Police Department is rolling out automated speed enforcement, radar guns with cameras.

The cameras will be in front of Hoech Middle School. During the day, the speed limit along this stretch of Ashby Road is only 20 miles per hour. But Police Chief Robert Schrader says it's not uncommon to catch drivers doing 50 mph.

The department is currently testing the cameras, and mailing out warning tickets. But the cameras will go online full time February 1. Anyone caught speeding could face a $100 fine.

"Contrary to popular belief, the speeders that get tickets and get fined think it's a money maker. I could care less about the money," Schrader said. "What I want is to cut the speeders in half or even more. I would prefer, nobody speed through there. That's what I'm after. It's all about the safety of the kids."

The police chief says the cameras will be installed at no cost to the city. The revenue from any tickets issued will be divided between the city and the camera manufacturer.
